Golden Beach Hotel

The Golden Beach hotel is situated in the newly developed tourist area of Bijilo and is about four minutes drive from the tourist centre of Senegambia. The capital of Banjul and the busy commercial centre of Serrenkunda are both within easy reach. Directly on the golden sands of Bijilo beach, the hotel is surrounded by pleasant gardens offering a secluded and tranquil setting in which to relax.

The Golden Beach is a small hotel with only twenty six rooms which adds to the cosy atmosphere of the place. The rooms are all well furnished and equipped with air conditioning, satellite TV, telephones and safes. Some, but not all rooms have a sea view but all do have a balcony. The family apartments are light, spacious and comfortably furnished. All rooms also have Wi-Fi internet access.

Dining takes place in the Sally restaurant. The light airy indoor space has a splash of colour from the traditional print coverings on the dining chairs or there is the choice of al fresco dining on the terrace. Serving breakfast and dinner The Sally mixes international cuisine with traditional Gambian dishes. After dinner sit back and enjoy a cocktail or two in one of the hotels two bars, The Lobby or The Cocktail Bar. The Poolside restaurant and bar offers outdoor dining and specialises in seafood and grills.

For business travellers the hotel has conference facilities for one hundred and fifty people and internet access throughout all public areas of the hotel. The hotel also operates its own car hire service on site for both business guests and holidaymakers. The main theme here is relaxation but the hotel does also offer beach volleyball, table tennis and bicycle hire. This is not a hectic activity based resort; this is a chance to chill out in the African sun.

Bijilo is the home of the Bijilo Forest Park. Walking through the natural vegetation gives visitors the chance to interact with the wild monkeys that live here. Visitors are best advised to hire a guide at the park itself and not take up the many offers they will find en route! As well as several species of monkey the Forest Park is also home to Nile monitors, snakes and dozens of exotic birds. Seeing the whole park is quite an expedition so not advisable for the less mobile. Make sure you drink plenty and have regular stops; it can get very humid in the forest. There is not that much to do in Bijilo, its attraction is the beautiful stretch of sand and the opportunity to completely relax.

The Bijilo area has a number of restaurants dotted along the long sandy beach, so those who wanted to venture from the surroundings of the Golden Beach will find themselves with plenty of choice. Be prepared to take a little exercise as this is a very long beach and not overcrowded with hotels. Most of the dining options are situated in the hotel complexes, but the Ocean Blue bar on the border of Bijilo and Brufut is right on the beach and offers excellent seafood including Barracuda and Butter Fish. The owner will even rustle up fish and chips if requested. This is a daytime destination as there is no electricity! This is a little gem of a place with a thatched roof, huts to hire for overnight stays and even the opportunity to camp overnight. Adventurous travellers will love the native feel of the place.

Getting around Gambia is not that difficult; public transport is very low key so car hire or use of a taxi is the best option. Visitors intending to hire a car need to be aware that although the main resort road is a good tarmac surface, it is only partially lit; and straying off this route may take you onto a dirt track with no road signs or lights of any description. It is best to agree a price before getting into a Gambian taxi, as there are differences in price between drivers. Bush taxis cover the whole country and are very cheap. But they are also very overcrowded and don't run to any type of schedule.

The Golden Beach hotel is only a twenty minute journey from the main airport at Yundum. Independent travellers are advised to book a transfer before departing or to contact the hotel when making their reservation and request a reliable taxi to meet them at the airport. Once you get to the Golden beach then there really is no need to worry about finding your way anywhere else unless you really want to. Everything you want for that chill out week in the sun is right here.
