Sarges Hotel

Gambia is a small country on the West African coast, surrounded by Senegal and with a colourful and flamboyant culture. Sarges Hotel is located within the heart of Senegambia, the main tourist area along the coast of Gambia. Situated in Tafbel, the hotel is only a five minute walk from the long stretches of sandy beach and rolling waves of the Atlantic Sea. Built in 1994, Sarges Hotel is well established and a popular place to stay. It consists of 24 furnished studios, 60 standard rooms and 14 suites and with 98 rooms the hotel is able to ensure the best service for all of its guests. Each room has its own en suite bathroom, air conditioning, TV and telephone. There is a large outdoor swimming pool surrounded by a sun terrace, as well as a laundry service. Just outside the hotel entrance guests can hire bikes and motorcycles and there are plenty of car hire outlets available close to the hotel. Sarges Hotel is close to banks, restaurants, night clubs and shops and the whole of the Senegambia strip comes alive in the evening.

Behind the hotel is Bijilo Forest Park and Nature Trail, known locally as Monkey Park, a half square kilometre woodland reserve close to the beach at the southern end of Senegambia. The reserve holds one of the country's last stands of rhun palms which at one time lined the coastline of Gambia. Here visitors are likely to see red colobus and vervet monkeys, large monitor lizards, squirrels and many exotic birds.

Close to the hotel is the Senegambia Craft Market where visitors can enjoy watching crafts people producing hand made items. This is a great place to buy holiday souvenirs and find a bargain. Approximately three miles north of Senegambia is Kotu with its own craft market and the Fajara Golf Course which lies at the edge of Kotu Stream. Katchikali Crocodile Pool is located just outside Bakau and Fajara. Considered a sacred pool the waters are often used for sacred rituals along with a highly charged atmosphere with drumming and dancing. Here there are beautiful trees with highly visible birds and monkeys and at least 12 Nile crocodiles inhabit the pool.

There are many trips available to enjoy in Gambia, giving visitors a chance to see the real country by travelling inland to see how local villagers live. River trips are available, cruising the River Gambia for a few days, passing the wilderness and spotting the chimpanzees and hippos along the river banks. Gambia river excursions depart from Tendaba to Janjanbureh Island where visitors can stay overnight at the Bird Safari Camp, enjoy river swimming and do a spot of birdwatching before spending an enjoyable evening under the stars with camp fire entertainment from local dancers and drummers. Visitors can also arrange trips to go creek fishing for the day along the mangrove creeks close to the capital, Banjul.

Evening entertainment is available at many hotels, but there are also many night clubs and discos to choose from. Local cuisine is available in the many cafes, restaurants and beach bars during the day and evening. Banjul International Airport is only 20 minutes drive from Sarges Hotel. Local transport is reliable, with a regular bus service running along the coast. Tourist taxis are painted green with white diamonds on the sides and offer trips at fixed rates. Bush taxis are much cheaper and are cars, minibuses, vans or even carts which are shared between passengers.
