El Sol Restaurant

El Sol Restaurant

Mexican Cuisine and Beyond

Something fantastic has happened in Gambia. A new restaurant has opened, bringing a whole new concept of dining experience to Gambia. The El Sol Restaurant opened its doors in 2009 and what a real treat it is! Something completely new for Gambia. The El Sol offers the highest quality Mexican cuisine at very reasonable rates. The El Sol Restaurant is the first of its kind in Gambia and recently was voted by Trip Advisor as one of the top 3 restaurants in the whole of Gambia.

The El Sol is easy to find. It is situated just outside the very busy centre of Kololi. You can easily reach it by foot; it is just off Bertil Harding Highway, which is the main road to the airport, in the Village Complex. There is also a spa in the Village Complex as well as a supermarket and dry cleaners.

It is not absolutely necessary to pre-book your table, though during the summer season it is worth remembering that it can get quite busy. You can either telephone: 220 446 6937 or if you prefer you can contact them in writing at: The El Sol Restaurant, The Village Complex, Kololi, The Gambia. The El Sol generally starts the evening meal session at around 5.30pm. There is no such closing time as such, but it is open until late.

The El Sol is lavishly decorated in golden brown, orange and deep purple, with wodworks of art adorning the richly painted walls. The tables are draped in rich, red tablecloths, surrounded by cream hessian chairs. This all evokes a very contemporary and modern feel, but also that of clean, unadulterated luxury. There is a bar in the far corner, fully stocked with well known brands of alcohol and some of the best wines in Gambia. If you would like to have a drink before your meal, there is a luxuriously soft sofa and a few stools at the front near the patio doors.

Most of the seating at the El Sol is inside the building, but as you would imagine, with a restaurant of such calibre, complete with huge sun umbrellas to protect you from the intense Gambian sunshine. Although outside, the seating is more what you would expect in your own garden - wooden garden chairs and tables. Though the tables are still covered with cloths, to compliment those inside.

The service is second to none. All the waiters are extremely friendly and helpful, leaving you feeling completely pampered. The menu is extensive, mouthwatering and the quality of food served is exceptional. Using only the finest ingredients and freshest of vegetables and meats, fish and poultry, it is true quality.

El Sol Cuisine

The El Sol, primarily serves Mexican food and the menu does reflect this, although it does offer other alternatives for those of us who prefer something a little less spicy. Some of the simpler meals on offer are: Chicken Burger in a bun, accompanied by home made chips and a side salad, as well as Spaghetti Allo Scolglio, which is spaghetti with shrimps in a tomato and white wine sauce. The versatility of the El Sol menu does make this the perfect venue for individuals and families with children alike and the El Sol also caters for large parties.

The El Sol's Mexican menu is extensive and encompasses all manner of Mexican food, including the traditional Tapas. 'Tapas' originated in Andalucia, Southern Spain and are small appetisers served in bowls. These can be either hot or cold. The El Sol have opted to serve delights such as fried battered onion rings (quite spicy), accompanied with a garlic mayo, toasted tortillas with cheese and chillies, (quite hot) and Mexican style cigarillos with a mixture of cheese and seafood. These are only a small sample of the offerings of El Sol. The main menu has the traditional chilli con carne, enchiladas or fajitas, as well as numerous vegetarian options. There really is something for all tastes.

It is worth remembering that on Mondays the El Sol only serves tapas and desserts, but otherwise the kitchens are open Monday to Sunday, inclusive from around 5.30pm, with last orders in the kitchen being accepted at approximately 11.30pm.

If you get the opportunity, the El Sol is definitely a great place to visit. If you are not hungry, (once you have glanced at the extensive menu, I am sure you will soon change your mind!), the El Sol is equally perfect for just sitting outside and watching the world go by, whilst you savour your well deserved drink.
