The Gaya Art Cafe

Nestled sweetly next to the Senegambia Craft Market and on the way to the airport, just off Bertil Harding Highway, is the Gaya Art Cafe. Established in 2004, three years after the shop was initially opened, Gaya Art Cafe offers a unique atmosphere. This is because you are surrounded by beautiful objects from many different places of origin - from the cloths of Nigeria, to truly magnificent works of art, a treasure trove of beautiful African artefacts alongside local crafts. It has the aura of an Asian, African, Aladdin's Cave. There are big, comfy, leather armchairs indoors and seats on the terrace garden outside where you are able to sit or stretch out on a lounger and watch the world go by.

The decor is not the only unique thing about the Gaya Art Club Cafe; the food on the menu is loosely Continental European and is made with their own special twist. There are a selection of tapas (traditionally a Spanish dish) hot or cold appetisers, such as olives, cheese or fried baby squid, healthy salads, or even scrumptious freshly baked focaccia and tortilla. All of these are very reasonably priced. A grilled focaccia with artichoke hearts, mozzarella cheese and ham, will cost a very reasonable 225.00 Dalasi, whilst a toasted pitta bread filled with roast vegetables, chickpeas and lamb, is 295.00 Dalasi. They also serve the traditional Greek dish, moussaka, for 375.00 Dalasi. The cafe serves an excellent choice of freshly prepared food available at very reasonable rates.

The menu also consists of a huge range of smoothies. Very tasty as well as being a healthy alternative to soft drinks. The 'Gaya Special' is particularly good, consisting of pineapple, banana, coconut milk and orange juice. For a brilliant price of 100.00 Dalasi. If you are extremely health conscious, you can experience the 'Feel Good' - the ingredients include dates, muesli, Gambian honey, yogurt and banana. Mouth-watering and good for you.

The Gaya Art Cafe has an extensive range of freshly roasted coffee on offer, with coffee beans from around the world and an equally comprehensive choice of deserts. You might like to try a piece of their lemon cheesecake for your own little piece of heaven. There are soft drinks as well as chilled white wine, all of which can be enjoyed in immensely comfortable, leather armchairs whilst reading one of the many magazines available for customers to peruse.

There are no set opening or closing times as such at the Gaya Art Cafe, they merely open from Monday to Saturday, from lunch through to dinner. Last orders for food tends to be around 10pm. To reserve a table, you can always call ahead, although it's not mandatory by any means. If you just drop in you will be made at home and very welcome.

This is the perfect place to visit if you like to look at beautiful objects from around the world - enjoy good food, relax and take in a friendly, interesting, atmosphere. Gifts to take home for friends and family abound here, as well as fantastic objects of various kinds of art, there are amazing and inspirational pieces of handcrafted furniture and more appropriately sized gifts for taking home. These range from gift bags with luxurious, beautifully presented, toiletries and beautifully created silk scarves. Also available for purchase, are items of custom made jewellery.
