Jewel of India Restaurant

When holidaying in Gambia, if you are seeking something a little bit different and truly authentic in the way of cuisine, the Jewel of India in Gambia is well worth a visit. This recently renovated restaurant is easily found, it is situated in the very heart of the Senegambia tourist strip only a short walk from the main hotels. The Jewel of India is well established and offers a wonderful aromatic, authentic north Indian cuisine. The truly mouth-watering menu offers a range of dishes, with the Punjabi 'Tandoori' cooking implementing the use of a large earthen oven, half-sunk in the ground and heated from underneath by a huge coal fire. This restaurant is also fully licensed and bookings can be made in advance on telephone number 220 4460340, or if you prefer you can contact them in writing at The Jewel of India, Senegambia, Kololi, Gambia.

As you would probably expect from a traditional Indian restaurant, the décor is in rich bright colours, glittering gold and opulent fabrics. All this creates a wonderful ambiance and a truly luxurious environment. There are a number of tables inside the restaurant, but there is also an outside seating area where you can soak up the atmosphere combined with wonderful views of the Senegambia strip. The service is outstanding and the food exceptional. All food on offer is north Indian, although it is very reasonably priced and the quality is without doubt second to none, with an exciting and varied mix of spices.

On a Saturday evening, the Jewel of India offers a buffet, starting at 7pm. There are a large number of appetising Indian dishes set out for you to enjoy at a set price. Perfect for those of us who aren't experienced with this kind of cuisine, or equally for those who just wish to try something new.

The main menu itself is extensive. Offering a number of starters, such as Chicken Samosa, Onion Bahjee and Shami Kebab. There are vegetable starters available too, such as Vegetable Samosa. The Tandoori menu ranges from the traditional Tandoori Chicken and Fish Tikka, through to the less traditional, but extremely exotic Tandoori Lobster. All are very reasonably priced, ranging from 200 Dalasi to a very reasonable 600 Dalasi for the Tandoori Lobster. For those of us who like a little of everything, you could try the Tandoori Mixed Grill, for 350 Dalasi: offering fish, chicken, lamb and prawns all marinated in yogurt, mild spices and of course roasted in the traditional Tandoori oven.

For curry lovers there are all varieties of curries to choose from, ranging from the very mild Chicken Tikka Masala, through to the spicy Gosht Vindaloo; again there are vegetarian options available for those of us who prefer non-meat dishes.

There are a number of dessert dishes on offer, including the traditional Indian ice cream, Malai Kulfi, which consists of a traditional Indian ice cream flavoured with dry fruits, cardamom and saffron - truly scrumptious! Specials are also available, these are subject to change on a daily basis.

A comprehensive drinks menu is available at the Jewel of India, including soft drinks such as Sprite and Fanta and refreshingly, there is the sugar free option of Diet Coke. In addition to this you may like to try the traditionally brewed Julbrew. This is brewed in Banjul, the capital, by Gambia's only brewery. Other drinks on offer are Stella, Becks and Heineken; whilst also offering, Masala tea, the traditional Indian tea made by brewing tea with a mixture of aromatic Indian spices and herbs, a genuine Indian drink. Spirits are also available, along with liqueurs and mineral water.

The Jewel of Indian also caters for parties and has a full extensive menu to take away, which makes it perfect for the large wedding parties; or if you merely want to take your authentic Indian food and sit on the nearby beach, experience the sun going down and feel the refreshing and yet relaxing sea breeze from the calm waters of the Atlantic.

Between the months of May to September it is not necessary to make a reservation, but in the remaining months, it would be wise to ring ahead and book your table, on telephone number 220 4460340. It is worthwhile noting that the Jewel of India does not accept bookings by email.

It is also worth remembering that whilst the Jewel of India does not offer accommodation of any sort, it is situated very close to the main hotels in Kololi on the Senegambia strip where accommodation of the highest quality is readily available.
